Catherine Hance Wins Miss Winnipesaukee Title

Miss Catherine Hance of Red Bank, N.J., was awarded the title of “Miss Winnipesaukee” at the Winnipesaukee Gardens last evening and was given a beautiful silver loving cup emblematic of the title by Miss Margaret Ekdahl, who is “Miss America for 1930.”

A large group of dancers attended the annual bathing beauty ball and it was pronounced a great success by those present.

Miss America 1930 To Present Miss Winnipesaukee Pageant Trophy

The annual bathing beauty ball will be held at the Winnipesaukee Gardens, the Weirs, tonight, and “Miss Winnipesaukee for 1930” will be selected by “Miss America for 1930,” Miss Margaret Ekdahl, judged to be the most beautiful girl in the United States, will make a personal appearance at the Gardens in the costumes which she wore when winning the beauty title.

According to Manager James R. Irwin there are already several entrants in the beauty contest, and it is expected that several former title holders will be present seeking new honors this year.

I was curious to see Miss Winnipesaukee 1930 had the current Miss America, Margaret Ekdahl, as a judge. I was certain that a Miss America pageant was not held in 1930 so I contacted Ric Ferentz at the Miss America Organization for further information. He directed me to the following from the Miss America website:

1930 - Taking matters into his own hands, Pageant Director General of the 1920's, Armand T. Nichols, Atlantic City local and former Mayor's secretary, attempted to convince city officials to bring back the fabled Atlantic City Pageant. Despite being in the throes of the Great Depression, he convinced the city it was losing out on valuable revenues for having abandoned it. He sited a successful event of a much smaller scale staged in Florida where a "Miss America' (Tampa's Margaret Ekdahl) was crowned. But, Atlantic City Hotelmen refused to endorse its return."
